Just a few years ago, in its infancy, Twitter was a joke. Only egomaniac celebrities and tweens filled the space with boring updates, nonsense and delusions of grandeur. And then something changed. Large and small corporations recognized its power to leverage brands, offer discounts and drive traffic to their sites and stores. Celebrities used it to build empires. And dictatorial empires fell, because of it.
In case you missed it, last month President Obama was “interviewed” entirely through a Twitter Q&A, moderated by Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey. That’s right. In 140 characters, anyone on this once thought of “silly” site, could submit a question to one of the most powerful people on the planet. The most fascinating thing about this Twitter Q&A with the President was how well it worked.
A week before it was to happen, the White House sent out a press release letting people know about the event and asked that questions be submitted via Twitter using the hashtag “#askobama”. In total, there were some 169,395 tweets with the #askobama hashtag. According to the stats compiled by event partner, Mass Relevance, 26% of the Tweet questions were about jobs, 19% were about the budget, 16% were about taxes, 10% were about education, and 6% were about housing.
So if the President of the United States is on Twitter. The question is, why aren’t you yet? Here are a few Tweet-writing tips to inspire and help you grab attention and followers on this now powerful social media site and smart business must.
