Don from San Diego, CA asks:

When replying to a job post via e-mail, what would be the best file format to choose when attaching a resume, MS Word, PDF, another, or several?

Thank you Don for your question.

It depends on the system or the method of submission. If you are applying online through a company applicant tracking system and you have the option of attaching a resume they should state the file formats which they accept. In most cases, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) accept Microsoft Word, PDF or Text file formats. I recommend MS Word first, then PDF.

One method often overlooked when applying online is the Cut and Paste option. If you are able, submit your resume using this method AND attach your MS Word or PDF file. This will ensure that your resume will be properly formatted in the ATS as to be fully “searchable”. Recruiter enter keywords from their end of the system to capture applicants that meet criteria of a search. If your resume is not properly indexed in the system, your resume may not come up in a search.

If you are sending your resume to an employer via email. I would recommend sending it in both MS Word and PDF file formats.

I hope that helps.
